Integrated Behavioral Health in Patient-Centered Medical Homes: Effects on Emergency Department Utilization and Total Cost of Care

Description

Abstract:
Patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) provide team-based, patient-centered care and have been associated with decreased healthcare utilization. Recently, PCMH model expanded to include screening and on-site treatment for behavioral health conditions, known as integrated behavioral health (IBH). One in three individuals in the US suffered from a behavioral health condition in the last year2, and conditions often go undiagnosed and untreated. IBH in primary care is associated with improved patient and clinician satisfaction4, but mixed evidence on healthcare utilization. This study investigates the effects of a two-year facilitated IBH intervention in PCMHs on the rate of emergency department visits and total cost of care
