The on-going reception of Machado de Assis in the United States: is the third time the charm?

Description

Abstract:
This text examines the critical reception of Machado de Assis's work in the United States in three different phases: (1) the 1950s, during which good English translations of the famous novels 'Epitaph of a Small Winner,' 'Dom Casmurro,' and 'Philosopher or Dog?' were published; (2) the 1960s, during which the "boom" of Latin-American literature gained visilibity in the United States, and (3) the present, in which the Brazilian master is close to receiving the acclaim he deserves. In this process, the article comments on the importance of recent studies such as those of Susan Sontag, Harold Bloom, and Michael Wood, through which Machado is becoming a familiar and respected author in our intellectual and artistic community. Finally, the text argues that there are many aspects of Machado's work yet to be explored by North American critics, and that this work will play an important role in the development of a new academic discipline: Inter-American Studies.
