Artificial Intelligence as a Driver of and Solution to the Spread of Health Misinformation in Emergency Care: A Literature Review

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to both counter and amplify health misinformation. Within emergency medicine (EM), there is an urgent need to understand and address these implications. This project represents the first systematic effort to identify key knowledge gaps and develop a ten-year research agenda to guide EM’s response to this emerging challenge. A narrative review was conducted to build a comprehensive database of relevant literature, which will inform the creation of realistic, hypothetical vignettes that will map system-level interventions. Insights from these findings will inform consensus building using a modified Delphi Method at the 2026 Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Consensus Conference. The findings aim to provide a foundation for future research, policy development, and best practices to ensure that AI technologies strengthen trustworthy communication in emergency care.
