- Abstract:
- This paper outlines a creative, practice-based approach to exploring the entanglements between people and information technologies, especially as it relates to the role of surveillance technologies in contemporary consumer society. Chapter 1 defines terms such as systems, processes, and agency, and posits that systems- and process-oriented artworks can facilitate critical, experiential engagements with the technologies that underpin our everyday lives. Chapter 2 contextualizes this dissertation within a larger history of artists engaging with systems-oriented thinking. These include Bebe Barron and Louis Barron, Iannis Xenakis, Laurie Spiegel, Pauline Oliveros, and Brian Eno. The works of these artists are also contextualized within larger frameworks such as information theory and cybernetics. Chapter 3 describes the practice-based portion of this dissertation project, titled freeicecream.net, which comprises a series of a performance and installation environments in which human and nonhuman agents codetermine emergent outcomes by influencing the system that controls the performance/installation environment. Chapter 3 also describes the process of building, testing, and deploying the technical infrastructure that underpins freeicecream.net. Chapter 4 offers an analysis of freeicecream.net, including an overview of changes made to accommodate the shift from an in-person interactive, experience to a streaming, online format. Finally, Chapter 5 outlines future considerations for the development of freeicecream.net, including a third version of the work that is under development as the time of writing. Appendices with additional documentation and code examples follow the main text.
