- Abstract:
- In many low- or middle-income countries (LMICs), general clinicians provide most emergency medical care. The modules discussed in this project are part of a larger curriculum to teach generalist providers the identification and stabilization of common pediatric emergencies, piloted at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA) Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department in Belize City, Belize. Module 5 covers diabetic, ophthalmologic, ear, nose, & throat (ENT), and dermatologic emergencies, and Module 6 covers traumatic and orthopedic emergencies. We aim to use this curriculum to provide generalists with a care framework in the management of pediatric emergencies, as early recognition and stabilization of critically ill children can improve patient outcomes. Efficacy analysis of the curriculum was performed based on pre- and post-tests from the pilot participants, which showed significant score increases indicating retention and improved clinical competence.
