- Victor Rui Dores’ essay “A brief history of a Faial lady who married a Russian prince” recounted the 1866 marriage of Carolina Street Curry da Câmara Cabral of Horta, Faial, to a Russian naval officer, Prince Constantine Meschersky. For further reading, the essay’s endnote recommended, inter alia, the detailed account in The Annals of the Dabney Family in Fayal, a vast three-volume compilation of family papers, diary entries, and personal reminiscences by Roxana Lewis Dabney (1827-1913)—the granddaughter, daughter, and sister of three generations of American consuls in the Azores during most of the 19th century, and a friend of Carolina and the Currys. This article presents: an English translation of Victor’s essay; relevant background on the Dabneys, Carolina and Constantine; and excerpts from the Annals about the couple.
- O ensaio de Victor Rui Dores “Breve história de uma senhora faialense que casou com um príncipe russo” relata o casamento, em 1866, de Carolina Street Curry da Câmara Cabral, da Horta, Faial, com um oficial da marinha russa, o príncipe Constantine Meschersky. Para leitura adicional, a nota final do ensaio recomendava, entre outros, o relato pormenorizado no Anais da família Dabney no Faial, uma vasta compilação de três volumes de documentos familiares, de entradas de diário, e das reminiscências pessoais por Roxana Lewis Dabney (1827-1913)—neta, filha, e irmã de três gerações de cônsules americanos nos Açores na maioria do século XIX, e amiga da Carolina e dos Curry.
