- Abstract:
- This dissertation analyzes the poetic strategies of primacy and subsumption, and their interactions, in epic poetry across four authors in the Greco-Roman epic tradition. I argue that these strategies are central to Greek epic as far back as we have evidence of such a tradition, and that they continue to define and shape the tradition as it progress. I proceed in four chapters, each of which treats one of four authors: Homer, Ennius, Statius, and Nonnus.
