- Abstract:
- With the growing proportion of older adults in the United States—and the corresponding rise in nursing home residency—preserving residents’ ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) has become an important public health priority. While many nursing homes offer rehabilitation programs, group-based creative interventions that specifically target fine motor skills of the upper extremities remain underutilized and understudied. Fine motor function plays a critical role in maintaining independence and autonomy, as well as supporting overall quality of life. Structured group-based visual and creative arts programs may therefore provide a promising, non-pharmacological approach to support motor function and psychosocial well-being among nursing home residents. This study aims to examine both the feasibility and effectiveness of a four-week structured arts curriculum designed to enhance fine motor control, visual-motor integration, and hand-eye coordination in older adults. Pre-post effects of a structured arts programming on the upper extremity fine motor skills, participant depressive symptoms, and participant mood will be evaluated over the intervention period and before and after each class.
