Description
- Abstract:
- After the arrival of the Portuguese Court to Rio de Janeiro in 1808, the Cidade Nova neighborhood was established and assumed a double function as a peripheral area (on the margins of the old city and inhabited by the lower classes) and geopgrahic center, between the 'old city' and São Cristovão, where the royal (and later the imperial) family resided. The privilieged location led to investments in the infrastructure of the swampy region, but a series of yellow fever epidemics during the second half of the 19th century pushed away the wealthier inhabitants of the neighborhood. This neighborhood rarely appears in the literature of historical narratives of the time, with the exception of reports from travelers who crossed the Cidade Nova to visit Dom Pedro II. This text analyzes a notable exception: 'Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias' (1852-3) by Manuel Antônio de Almeida. The narrator establishes a 'here,' in opposition to a 'there.' This 'there' is the Cidade Nova, which appears as a distant and vague space of disorder, gypsies, and caboclo (mestizo) witchcraft. At the same time, the descriptions of what happens 'there,' of the festivals and gypsy rituals, contain a level of detail that denounce the familiarity of the author with these practices. Departing from the famous reading of António Cândido that sees a dialectic between order and disorder in both the narrative and in Brazilian society of that period, this text presents this dynamic as an indication of a 'spatial porosity' that was characteristic of Rio de Janeiro in this period.
