The efficacy of a low fiber compared to a clear liquid diet in children’s colonoscopy bowel preparation

Description

Abstract:
Objectives: To improve the experience of pediatric patients undergoing a bowel clean out in preparation for a colonoscopy, we evaluated the efficacy of a low fiber diet compared to a standard, clear-liquid diet. We also evaluated whether a low fiber diet improved patients and parents’ satisfaction, tolerance, and adherence with the cleanout process. Methods: 220 subjects will be recruited and randomized to a low fiber diet group and the standard of care (clear liquid) diet group. The endoscopists were blinded to the diet group and asked to document the efficacy of the cleanout using Boston Bowel Preparations Scale. A questionnaire was distributed to the subject to be completed the day of procedure to measure the secondary outcomes. Results: Compared to those in the standard diet, subjects in the low fiber diet group had comparable colonoscopy bowel preparation scores, better bowel-prep medication adherence, and better satisfaction scores. Both groups required comparable bowel-prep medications. There was no statistical difference in the number of canceled colonoscopies between the two groups. Conclusion: A low fiber diet on the day of a colonoscopy prep is equally as effective as a standard clear liquid diet on measures of children’s colonoscopy bowel preparation scale, as well as patient and parent satisfaction.
