- Background: Anesthesiology, a critical field in medicine, heavily relies on evidence-based practices, which are often derived from clinical trials. Understanding the scope and focus of research in anesthesiology can shed light on current trends, gaps, and future directions in the field. This poster presents a comprehensive analysis of clinical trials related to anesthesiology, catalogued from the registry of ClinicalTrials.gov Objective: To identify and categorize all clinical trials pertaining to anesthesiology listed on ClinicalTrials.gov. By doing so, we aim to establish a clear overview of the research landscape in anesthesiology, identifying prevalent trends in study focus, methodologies, and patient outcomes. Methods: We took the general research categories from the ASA website’s “Research and Guidelines” page. To obtain a comprehensive list of clinical trials relevant to Anesthesia, we queried clinicaltrials.gov with the term “Anesthesia” and excluded studies which were withdrawn and/or suspended. The resulting trials were then organized into categories based on keywords extracted from the "Study Title", "Brief Summary", "Conditions", and "Interventions" columns. This process yielded a significant amount of trials being in an “uncategorized” cluster. In order to resolve this, the uncategorized trials were converted into a TF-IDF (Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency) matrix. Then, we reduced the dimensionality of the data using a PCA (Principal component analysis) and applied Kmeans clustering to the reduced data. The optimal number of clusters was obtained using the elbow method and the top terms within each cluster were identified to be used as a general definition for each category. Discussion: The categorized clinical trials reveal significant insights into the research priorities within anesthesiology. Our findings indicate a concentration of studies in pain medicine and education. Additionally, we observed a limited number of trials in various categories, ranging from anesthesia in older populations to patient safety and education. This analysis serves to educate the community on the current state of clinical trials in Anesthesia and identify points of growth and/or saturation in order to better guide future research directions. Limitations: This study only analyzed and categorized clinical trials from ClinicalTrials.gov, which is a database comprised of clinical trials and observational studies that have been approved by the NIH and other US agencies. Any trials or studies that do not fall under this category are not represented in this dataset. Furthermore, the data analysis techniques used to categorize these categories is reliant on keyword clustering which means there is a risk of inaccurate categorization for studies that may span across multiple categories.
