C-Sections, Prenatal Care, and Birth Equity: Transparency in Cesarean Rates in Rhode Island

Description

Abstract:
Objective: This project examines the disparities in birth outcomes and the variability amongst prenatal care centers in Rhode Island. Methods: This is a mixed methods study of Vital Records data from the Rhode Island Department of Health for all births in the state between 2016 and 2021 to explore the adequacy of prenatal care through analysis of its effect on birth outcomes for race/ethnicity, primary language, and insurance type at delivery. It also includes a survey of all prenatal care sites in the state. Preliminary Results: There were approximately 54,742 births during the time period of this study. The average gestational age was 38.5 weeks, total prenatal visits were 12.29, and birthing parent age was 30.04 years. About 45 locations in RI offer prenatal care, including community health centers, hospital-affiliated clinics, and private practices. Through interdisciplinary analysis, this project aims to supplement the foundation of community knowledge and experience within the state’s birthing hospitals with quantitative data, and evaluate the potential impact of prenatal care sites statewide. Conclusions: This project prioritizes both the production of academic scholarship and the creation of patient-facing resources describing the results and local options for prenatal care. It ultimately aims to advance Birth Justice by exploring health disparities, centering patient empowerment, and promoting health system transparency and accountability to the community. Data analysis was still being completed at the time of this poster.
