- Abstract:
- Interview with Congolese-born Liverpool artist Daniel “Blue Saint” Sebuyange on migration, identity, and community arts in L8; experiences of racism; and Congo’s colonial/slavery histories and their modern legacies. He considers Liverpool’s role in the slave trade, the meaning of freedom and resistance, the International Slavery Museum, and performs his poem “Heartbeat” about holding Congo and Liverpool in one self. - Biographical/historical note: Daniel Sebuyange, known professionally as Blue Saint, is a Congolese-British rapper, singer-songwriter, spoken word poet, actor, producer, and designer. Blending hip-hop, RnB, and electronic influences, his work explores political, social, and philosophical themes through a strong narrative voice. He began rapping as a child and went on to win The Poetry Society’s SLAMbassadors Award at fourteen, earn a MOBO BeMOBO Award nomination at fifteen, and win Merseyrail Soundstation in 2014. A community facilitator and trustee of Unity Theatre, Daniel is also part of Curious Minds’ Anti-Racist group. Featured in "30 Under 30: The Young People Changing the Face of Liverpool" and The Common Sense Network’s "North30: 2021 North of England’s 30 Under 30 Trail Blazers," he has performed alongside artists such as Ed Sheeran, Akala, Pharoahe Monch, and Saul Williams, at venues including the Royal Albert Hall. His conceptual Enter Mynd EP series and debut album Mémoire have both received widespread acclaim and media attention.
