- “Mister Slang and Brazil” is the title of a series of chronicles written by Monteiro Lobato and published in a newspaper between December 1926 and January 1927. Months later, these texts were collected in a book of the same name published by Companhia Editora Nacional. Mister Slang, a sexagenarian Englishman living in Rio de Janeiro, receives visits from an anonymous friend with whom he talks between chess matches and doses of whisky. This is an essentially political book in which the writer hotly discusses national problems: economic policy, monetary and fiscal problems, corruption, authoritarianism, press censorship, police violence, among other topics. Almost a hundred years later, Lobato's work is still disconcerting.

Meses depois, esses textos foram reunidos em livro homônimo publicado pela Companhia Editora Nacional. Mister Slang, um inglês sexagenário radicado no Rio de Janeiro, recebe visitas de um amigo anônimo com quem trava diálogos entre partidas de xadrez e doses de whisky. Este é um livro essencialmente político no qual o escritor discute a quente os problemas nacionais: a política econômica, o problema monetário e fiscal, a corrupção, o autoritarismo, a censura à imprensa, a violência policial, entre outros temas. Quase cem anos depois, a atualidade da obra de Lobato é desconcertante.
