- In this interview, Tamzyn Van Den Heever, a social worker with the South African Council for Social Service Professions, discusses the widespread challenges of alcohol addiction and domestic violence in farming communities, including the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome. She reflects on her work providing intervention, aftercare, and reintegration support for those struggling with substance abuse, and on her determination to break the cycle of addiction in her own community by becoming “the change [she] wanted to see.” Please be advised that this interview may contain stories of trauma, both personal and community-wide related to the legacies of racial slavery and colonialism.
