The continent at the intersection of two worlds

Abstract:
This essay-conference reports the impressions of a reader and a writer who finds in Erico Verissimo’s work one of the fundamental references of his formation. Describing the background of his experiences of O Continente, he recalls the role of Romanticism and Realism in the further literature of the countryside and of the city, in the figures of Alencar and Machado, and analyzes the narrative objectivity and syntactic cleanliness of language, in addition to the role of the narrator, who observes his characters with a cinematographic eye and never as the author’ ventriloquist.
Este ensaio-conferência relata impressões de um leitor e de um escritor que encontra na obra de Erico Verissimo uma das referências fundamentais da sua formação. Descrevendo o pano de fundo de suas experiências de O Continente, relembra a função do Romantismo e do Realismo para a posterior literatura do campo e da cidade, nas figuras de Alencar e Machado, e analisa a objetividade narrativa e a limpeza sintática da linguagem, além do papel do narrador, que observa suas personagens com um olhar cinematográfico e nunca como um ventríloquo do autor.
