- The author discusses significant contributions of Moroccan political and military leader Mohammed bin Abdelkrim al-Khattabi to political development in Morocco. He mentions involvement of Abdelkrim in the Spanish and French colonial resistance from 1921 to 1926. Aside from his preference for reformist Islam, Abdelkrim is described as an admirer of secularist Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and supporter of modern state institutions. He also explores speculations concerning role of Abdelkrim in the antagonistic relations between the Rif region and the Moroccan makhzen or state authorities.
