- Abstract:
- Color aquatint ('Dawn by G.F.L.'), published Octr. 25, 1816; British military and naval officers in conference, indoors, with turbaned potentate and aides. Admiral Lord Exmouth's Flag Captain, Sir James Brisbane, in conference with the Dey of Algiers, August 30, 1816. Two days earlier the Anglo-Dutch fleet bombarded Algiers for 9 hours, in retaliation for the Dey's violation of a previous anti-slavery treaty. The Dey agreed to the expedition's demands, including large sums to compensate the British consul for loss of property. 1,200 Christians abducted from Naples and Sicily were repatriated. The setting is a room with low ceiling, a tent at left, and naval map on wall at right. In the dark frame, is a Christian Cross' -- Alamy.
