Idealism and individualism in a rare Pernambucan romance

Abstract:
Presentation and analysis of ‘Os Irmãos Marçal’ (1922), a novel by Olivio Montenegro, with attention to its publishing context and its circulation, within the framework of modern Brazilian fiction. The human and physical geography of Recife and Olinda are the setting within which the social and intimate plot unfolds. This article analyzes in particular the socialist idealism of one character and its silent clash with the selfishness of another.
Apresentação e análise do romance ‘Os Irmãos Marçal’ (1922), de Olivio Montenegro, com atenção para o contexto editorial e para sua circulação no quadro da moderna ficção brasileira. A geografia humana e física de Recife e Olinda são o cenário dentro do qual se desenvolve a trama social e íntima. São analisados neste artigo especialmente o idealismo socialista de uma personagem e seu embate silencioso com o egoísmo de outra.
