Beyond mimesis in 'Vidas secas': 'Acts of imagination'

Description

Abstract:
This work compares the premisses of Erich Auerbach’s study on the modes of representation of reality in Western literature, exposed in the work Mimesis, with the fictional work by Graciliano Ramos, the novel ‘Vidas Secas’. In exploring these issues in the work of the German philologist in Fabiano’s and Fabiano’s family’s narrative, there are certain perceivable criteria which are an essential part of the novel, such as seriousness and a break from classic stylistic. However, there is a dimension that the parameters developed by Auerbach do not contemplate, i.e. the capability of the work of thinking of itself as fiction, and, in order to further the analysis of the novel, the theory of the pretending acts, developed by Wolfgang Iser, is used. It is possible to conclude that the combination of the two approaches enriches the reading of the Brazilian novel, which reflects different modes of thinking about the literary work.
