- Abstract:
- BE REAL about Health is a community outreach program, in which medical students teach a condensed health curriculum at the Rhode Island Training School, the site of incarcerated youth in Rhode Island. While other high school students are receiving formalized health education, incarcerated youth receive little, if any. It is our mission to empower adjudicated adolescents to make informed decisions through interactive, discussion-based health education. In order to address the needs of this specific population, BE REAL about Health discusses the following topics with the number of sessions allocated in parentheses: sexual education (5), mental health literacy (1), sleep hygiene (2), nutrition (1) and exercise (1). The program consists of 10 consecutive weeks, with 45 minute sessions. Two medical student facilitators are assigned to a unit of 6-8 adjudicated youth and form longitudinal relationships with them throughout the program. The efficacy of the program will be determined by analysis of differences between the pre-assessment and post-assessment, as well as post-lesson evaluations. In the future, a tool will be implemented to assess how attitudes and perspectives of medical students towards incarcerated youth have changed over time, as the experience equally impacts the facilitators in addition to the youth
