- Abstract:
- From 1975 to 1997, refugees fled from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia due to wars in Southeast Asia. Refugees were often resettled to under-resourced neighborhoods, encountering poverty and racial tensions with other communities of color. Community organizations describe how Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees were initially resettled to vacant housing between Black and white neighborhoods in Philadelphia, encountering the racial tensions of segregation. I use spatial analysis tools to examine whether the tensions of resettlement and segregation continue to the present. In this research, I ask: today, where have Southeast Asian refugees formed communities in Philadelphia, in relation to Black and white communities?
