Description
- Abstract:
- Who can be the protagonist of the stories (and history) is the questioning that will cover the analyses of 'O Cortiço,' by Aluísio Azevedo, and the short story 'Pai contra mãe', by Machado de Assis. From the examination of the characters Pombinha and Arminda, it is possible to understand the position of these women as individuals in subjection: we have, on the one hand, the journey to the independence of the female body and pleasure – independence this, however, restricted to marginality – and, on the other hand, the total subjugation that excludes the individual from his human condition in function of his social position, that is, slavery.
