"The Hailstorms of March"

Description

Abstract:
Despite Haussmann's enormous power and influence over the city's developmental progress, his work grew to be more and more scrutinized by the public as time progressed. Towards the end of the Second Empire, Haussmann was in the midst of a potential financial scandal and was often the object of social, political and artistic critique. This anonymous caricature serves to dismantle previous notions of Haussmann's authority, portraying the Prefect as foolish as he literally falls from grace.
