Cérémonie d'inauguration: Le maréchal-président de la République et le cortège officiel traversant le parc du Trocadéro

Description

Abstract:
Opening ceremony of the 1878 World Fair. The 1878 Fair was the first one in France to be organized under a republican regime. The president at the time was Maréchal Mac Mahon, who had close ties with the royalist political circles. He participated to the opening ceremony on May 1rst, even though many buildings of the fair had not been completely finished. On this image, he is standing in profile in front of the Trocadéro fountains, right under the statue of the bull. The building in the background is one of the two galleries of the Trocadéro Palace.
