An image for Brazil: nature, profit, and paradise

Description

Abstract:
As Sérgio Buarque de Holanda has shown, books about America written by explorers and their chroniclers present the new world as a paradise. Authors such as Pero de Magalhães de Gandavo, Gabriel Soares de Sousa, Vicente do Salvador and Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão introduce another theme in their works as well, later reiterated in the poetry and prose of the 18th century (Antonil, Rocha Pitta, Manuel Botelho de Oliveira, Santa Maria de Itaparica): descriptions of nature intended to accentuate the commercial value of discovered resources. In addition to idealizing the natural setting, the chronicler, addressing colonizers and the Portuguese Crown, would invariably emphasize the lucrative benefits of land exploration. The romanticists from the 'Revista Niterói' generation re-examine this image of nature from an equally grandiose perspective, although completely eliminating the commercial attitude toward Brazil throughout the colonial period.
