Abstract:: This essay discusses the image of Rio de Janeiro as a visual construct of the Establishment, which used the nation's capital as a modem "stage" in the name of progress. The First Republic was a time of euphoria, symbolized by the city's ‘Avenida Central.’ During this period, popular culture was equated with the image of a traditional and antiquated city—precisely the appearance to be avoided—and, thus, was relegated to a marginal position. Taking into consideration notions of "euphoria" and "dysphoria," this essay examines the role of the ‘carioca’ scene as a narrative construct by using "theater" as a metaphor found in texts by Lima Barreto, Olavo Bilac, João do Rio, and Adelino Magalhães.; Este ensaio discute a imagem do Rio de Janeiro como uma construção visual do 'establishment', que utilizou o capital da nação como uma "etapa" moderna em nome do progresso. A Primeira República foi uma época de euforia, simbolizada pela Avenida Central da cidade. Durante esse período, a cultura popular foi equiparada à imagem de uma cidade tradicional e antiquada - precisamente a aparência a ser evitada - e, portanto, foi relegada a uma posição marginal. Levando em consideração noções de "euforia" e "disforia", este ensaio examina o papel da cena carioca como um construto narrativo, utilizando o "teatro" como metáfora encontrada em textos de Lima Barreto, Olavo Bilac, João do Rio e Adelino Magalhães.
