- This essay deals with Rubem Fonseca's debts to American practitioners of the ‘roman noir’ such as Dashiell Hammett or James Cain. The main interest lies not in tracing influences, but in setting Fonseca's conceptions of Archilochus' "great art" against the narrative conventions of the hard boiled detective fiction. Seen as a post-modern version of Hemingway's disenchanted view of the world as a battlefield, Fonseca's novels are questioned in their interpretation of social Brazilian life as thoroughly unauthentic except in moments of sheer violence.
- Este ensaio trata das dívidas de Rubem Fonseca para com os praticantes americanos do "roman noir", como Dashiell Hammett ou James Cain. Em vez de traçar influências, objetiva-se definir as concepções de Fonseca sobre a "grande arte" de Arquíloco contra as convenções narrativas tradicionais da ficção detetivesca. Vista como uma versão pós-moderna da visão desencantada de Hemingway do mundo como um campo de batalha, os romances de Fonseca são investigados em sua leitura da vida social brasileira como completamente inautêntica, exceto em momentos de violência crua.
