'São Bernardo': temporal dialectic and duplicity of the individual

Description

Abstract:
Although a legitimate representative of the generation of the 30s in his themes and ideology, in ‘São Bernardo’ Graciliano Ramos employs narrative strategies which are not characteristic of that period, as the play with different time levels and the duplicity of the subject. Using the narratology of Gérard Genette, it is possible to describe the significance effects construed by the narrational formulae of the novel and to emphasize how the narrative introduces a self-questioning subjectivity in the objective representation of the alienation and miseries of the social condition of the Brazilian Northeast.
