Description
- Abstract:
- This essay establishes the debt of Mário de Andrade in 'Macunaíma' and Alfred Döblin in 'Amazonas' to the anthropological researches of Theodor Koch-Grünberg. Although the two novelists used the material collected by Koch-Grünberg as pre-texts, in their presentation of the "character" of South American indigenous peoples 'Macunaíma' and 'Amazonas' reflect quite different intentions and antithetic ideological positions. It is in the composition technique of Andrade and Döblin that the most evident similarities between the two novels can be found.
