Rereading 'Vidas Secas': rediscovering the strong sertanejo

Description

Abstract:
Provocative in its central thesis, this essay points out to a scriptocentric prejudice that devaluates oral and illiterate cultures in the interpretative tradition of ‘Vidas Secas’. Starting from the concept of linguistic ta boos in European oral cultures, with further insights from Walter Ong and Luria, it restores the characters in Graciliano Ramos' novel to the legitimate value they have and denounces their victimization by strict orthodox sociological approaches.
