- The immigrant is an inflexible figure who is important to any attempt to reclaim not only the traits that make up his individuality or an idea of national identity, but also to the claims that national identity is a construct in need of a foreign gaze to deconstruct it from within. Scliar's text, similar to so many others of contemporary fiction—especially those that engage with immigration—grapples fictionally and theoretically with the concepts of identity and nationality, cultural translation, the in-between, intolerance, and bias, among others. The reading of this text, which parallels Segall's text in its engagement with unstable spaces of negotiated identity, attempts to interpret both in the context of an intersemiotic reading of contemporaneity.
- O imigrante é figura de inflexão importante para se recuperar não somente os traços que sua identidade imprime na pretensa inteireza da identidade nacional, mas da própria afirmação dessa última como um artifício, carente de um olhar de fora que a desconstrua a partir de dentro. O texto de Scliar, semelhantemente a tantos outros da ficção contemporânea e especialmente os que tematizam a imigração, trabalha ficcional e teoricamente os conceitos de identidade e nacionalidade, de tradução cultural, entre-lugar, intolerância e preconceito, além de outros. A leitura desse texto, em consonância com a obra de Segall, espaços instáveis de identidades negociadas, projeta o conjunto num campo de leitura intersemiótica de nossa contemporaneidade.
