Pela noite: An amorous pilgrimage

Description

Abstract:
Based on Gilbert Durand's structural anthropology of the imaginary, this essay analyses Caio Fernando Abreu's ‘Pela Noite’, one of the short novels collected in ‘Triângulo das Águas’. The rich and enigmatic imagery of the text is interpreted according to the nocturne and diurnal regimes proposed by Durand, with special attention to the meanings of symbolic places such as the house , the rooms, the city, as well as the two characters' deeds such as drinking, giving each other secret names, and exploring the night of the hostile city like idealistic knights. The analysis stresses images of the mystic structure of the nocturne regime, meaning descent, plunging, in search of the protective motherly womb, one of the main traits of the short novel. Digestive and sexual dominants are also emphasized, together with signs of inadequacy, evasion and solitude, so as to unveil the anthropological symbols of inhospitable modem urban civilization in relation to the place of homosexuality and love in it.
