- In lieu of an abstract, this is an excerpt from the first page: "Every Sunday at my house, my friend and "informant" eats lun ch with me. He is separated from his wife, has no children. I am a confirmed bachelor. He lives off dividends, the few there are; I am a translator, with some savings, in addition to owning my house. Nothing in particular worries us; not even eventually getting old—we've passed our forties, we're contemporaries, our exact birthdates belong more to the realm of the imagination than to reality. In this respect, I am genuinely optimistic, because I don't think that we're that bad off; we jog on Ibirapuera Park's track on Sunday momings and after showering we reward ourselves with a generous take-out lunch from the restaurant down the street: the street extending to the wide boulevard, that vast boulevard which was once merely the riverbed for Sapateiro creek's muddy waters."
