Peace and anarchy in the ‘Crônicas’ of Lima Barreto

Description

Abstract:
In this analysis of Lima Barreto's 'crónicas,' it is argued that there is a discourse about anarchy that permeates his works and is defended in both the literary and political sense. Different conceptions of anarchy are analyzed before demonstrating that, through the popular genre of the 'crónica,' Lima Barreto was able to equate style with content. He anticipated literary movements credited to Modernism and forged, in this way, a path for future writers. Humor and satire are important strategic components of Lima Barreto's multifaceted militant literary project. He not only inserted himself as an active participant in society but also contributed to the consolidation of a popular voice in opposition to powerful social institutions and to institutional power in general. In this way, he functioned as a ventriloquist for the common people.
