Being, world, and city: urban space in Drummond's poetry

Description

Abstract:
Drummond de Andrade's poetry distinguishes itself as a juxtaposition of contrasting elements. The disjunction initially apparent between being and the world expands to include other ruptures, such as the separation between the city and the country, Europe and Brazil, or social engagement and passive observation of violence. The city constitutes the whirlwind in that unites several of these competing forces. The urban environment, privileged stage of combat between opposing forces, function in Drummond's work as the space in which the contradictions of modernity are represented.
