- Whether at first sight there are similarities between scientific- philosophical apparatuses employed by Sílvio Romero and José Veríssimo in their respective approaches to Brazilian Literature, gradually a theoretical divergence is noticeable between those two critics. Such a divergence may be observed in regard to the concept of Literature, present not only in their essays but also in histories of Brazilian Literature proper - the one by Sílvio Romero, published in 1888, and the one by Veríssimo, in 1916. It is intended, thus, to examine the conceptions of Brazilian Literature formulated by Sílvio Romero and José Veríssimo, privileging those texts in which they analyze the work of Machado de Assis, aiming at understanding why both critics, for quite different reasons, were not able to offer productive critical perspective upon the body of work of the greatest XIX century Brazilian writer.
- Se, à primeira vista, existem semelhanças entre os aparatos científico-filosóficos empregados por Sílvio Romero e José Veríssimo em suas respectivas abordagens à literatura brasileira, gradativamente se observa uma divergência teórica entre esses dois críticos. Tal divergência pode ser observada em relação ao conceito de Literatura, presente não apenas em seus ensaios mas também em histórias da própria Literatura Brasileira - a de Sílvio Romero, publicada em 1888, e a de Veríssimo, em 1916. Pretende-se, assim, examinar as concepções de literatura brasileira formuladas por Sílvio Romero e José Veríssimo, privilegiando os textos em que analisam a obra de Machado de Assis, com o objetivo de compreender por que ambos os críticos, por motivos bastante diversos, não foram capazes de oferecer perspectiva crítica produtiva sobre o corpo de trabalho do maior escritor brasileiro do século XIX.
