Goethe's ‘Weltliteratur’ and the World of Lusophone Letters: The Case of Brazil

Description

Abstract:
Discussing the concept of ‘Weltliteratur’ beginning with Goethe, through Mme. de Stael, this essay associates it with the development of the Comparative Literature discipline and with the expansion of Lusophone studies, given the vast community of Portuguese-speaking countries. The extension of intellectual exchanges in the 21st century, facilitated by globalization and by new information technologies, is given little attention in humanities departments of American universities, especially with regard to Brazilian culture, which still lacks prominence. This article proposes new tasks for Brazilianists in the United States, encouraging the use of elements inherent in comparative studies, with the intent of linking Brazil to Luso-European, Luso-American, Luso-African, and Luso-Asian literatures and cultures, while at the same time linking it to dominant languages, in such a way as to underscore the excellence and originality of Brazilian works in comparison with canonical texts of World Literature.
