- The 1988 film Mystic Pizza, a coming of age romantic comedy centering on a fictitious pizzeria of the same name in Mystic, Connecticut, depicted many Portuguese American characters—including restaurant co proprietor Leona, who closely guarded her knowledge of the herbs and spices from Portugal’s Algarve region that she put in her pizzas’ secret tomato sauce (a recipe handed down through three generations of her family). The authors have endeavored to deconstruct Leona’s recipe, through research and recipe testing.
