Description
- Abstract:
- Nélida Piñon's ‘A República dos Sonhos’ (1984) parallels Brazilian history with the saga of the family of Madruga, an immigrant from Galicia. Using as her point of departure a week in 1983 while Madruga's wife lies dying, the novelist presents her reader with a series of analeptic narratives which dramatize the conflicts playing themselves out within Madruga's family, over the years since his arrival in Brazil. Those conflicts foreground the challenge of coming to grips with history in terms of the relationship of past to present, in terms of living authentically in one's own time, and in terms of bearing witness to history through the elaboration of texts which try to make sense of the material of history. Those concerns are played out in the gradual revelation that the novel is also the story of the preparation of Madruga's granddaughter to write the history of her family in Brazil.
