- This paper has three main concerns: the first one is with interpretation—or, to be more precise, it focuses on the narrator of ‘Memórias do cárcere’ as a reader of the authoritarianism produced by the Estado Novo dictatorship. Being an intellectual and belonging to a certain social group, Graciliano Ramos ends up by presenting contradictions that can be found in other writers and intellectuals of the 1930s. The second concern, then, is with the re-evaluation of Graciliano Ramos as a contradictory figure. The last one implies a rethinking of the literary canon, in the sense that books of memoirs have been neglected so far by the majority of the critics.
- Este artigo tem três preocupações principais: a primeira é com a interpretação – ou, para ser mais preciso, concentra-se no narrador de "Memórias do cárcere" como leitor do autoritarismo produzido pela ditadura do Estado Novo. Intelectual pertencente a um determinado grupo social, Graciliano Ramos acaba por apresentar contradições também encontradas noutros escritores e intelectuais da década de 1930. A segunda preocupação, então, é com a reavaliação de Graciliano Ramos como figura contraditória. Esta implica repensar o cânone literário, visto que livros de memórias foram, até agora, negligenciados pela maioria dos críticos.
