Non-verbal languages: the opening scenes in Luiz Fernando Carvalho's film ‘Lavoura Arcaica’

Description

Abstract:
In the film 'Lavoura Arcaica,' Luiz Fernando Carvalho works with the image as it relates to its symbolic and allegorical content, borrowing the critical perspective of Antonin Artaud with respect to signs, whose great significance is what affects us most immediately. The filmmaker explains that his objective was not to discuss life, but rather to "touch on life," as Artuad suggests, and that in order to reach his objective, he chose to use a complex combination of verbal and nonverbal languages to broaden the expressive possibilities. In addition to superimposing word and image, Carvalho mixes and fuses sounds, shouts, vibrations, color, light, and other audiovisual resources. In this process, he creates a language that is physical, plastic, and spatial, whose goal is that all of these elements of the big screen affect the spectator through his or her skin. To illustrate the creative process of Luiz Fernando Carvalho, this article seeks to dicuss the nonverbal languages of the initial scenes of the film, in light of the critical considerations of various theorists of literature, theater, and film.
